Mainframe Alternative Program gets results for Latin America
Mainframe Alternative Program gets results for Latin
America
Gustavo Fernandez/CSO
P5.tif (Graphic)
The Latin America Region Mainframe Alternative (MFA) program
started in FY92 with only five customers in the sales funnel. By the
end of June, the region got 17 orders, reaching 350 percent beyond
original target. Revised forecast is several hundred
times earlier estimates. The plan now includes additional market share
for coming years.
The key strategy is to focus HP internal and external
resources and to affect all critical elements that
contribute to the success of the program including HP and
channel partner organizations (managers, sales reps,
marketing, support, and administration), customer
organizations (decision makers), and opinion leaders (press
and consultants).
SF 39 is focusing selling efforts on targeted A and B
accounts that have installed large- and medium-size
mainframes. SF 38 is focusing on targeted B and C accounts
that have installed medium-size and low-end mainframes.
Selected channel partners complement SF 39 efforts on A
accounts, especially in accounts not targeted by SF 39.
SF 39 and 38 are focusing mainly on IBM and UNISYS opportunities by
following a taught qualification criteria and dedicating time and effort
closing prospects with the shortest decision making
process, which tend to be offloads and replacements for open systems.
SF 39 offers Corporate Business Server as an alternative to mainframes
for installed-base customers that demand powerful
systems.
The program started in Brazil, which has one of the largest
concentrations of mainframes worldwide, and is moving into
Mexico and other countries. After gaining HP and third-party
management commitment, an MFA tour focused available
resources on targeted key elements in Brazil, Mexico,
Argentina, and Venezuela. The tour leveraged the Corporate
Business Systems introduction, the HP MFA solutions, and the
Gartner Group Perspective on MFA.
The major accomplishments of the MFA tour were management
training, sales/marketing/support training, press
conferences, and executive seminars for new prospects,
installed base customers, consultants, and channel partners. In eight
working days 31 managers and 153 sales, marketing, and support people
were trained. Thirty-four people from the specialized
press attended the press conferences, 572 executives attended the
customer seminars, and the team visited four targeted accounts with
large MFA projects. The tour positioned HP as the mainframe
alternative supplier in the Latin America Region and generated favorable
news coverage.
HP announced that one of the largest Mexican retail chains
ordered 3 HP 9000 Model 890-4 and 64 workstations for a
total sale of $12.5 million in one year.
Additional accomplishments of the program include: In
Brazil, HP won nine MFA deals that generated $2 million
through a Bull T3 replacement that includes 1 HP 9000 Model
870 and 24 HP 9000 Model 807s. One customer is among the
largest Brazilian food manufacturers. A Software AG
distributor became an HP channel partner. HP conducted
three seminars for 200 ADABAS/NATURAL customers and 60
CINCOM (SUPRA/MANTIS) customers.

Lawson Software focuses on HP with Preferred Hardware
Program
Lawson Software focuses on HP with Preferred Hardware
Program
Lora O'Haver/GSY
Lawson Software and HP have signed an agreement for Lawson
to focus its UNIX system selling and marketing efforts on HP
platforms. Lawson has narrowed its selling relationships on
UNIX systems from six vendors to two: HP and IBM. With HP,
Lawson has created a special vendor-specific marketing
program called Preferred Hardware Platform (PHP).
HP will be Lawson's only PHP vendor. The PHP program will
be jointly funded by Lawson and HP. The focus will be on
joint advertising, lead generation, and promotional events
to identify, qualify, and close deals for Lawson's
applications on HP platforms.
Lawson's mainframe-class financials, human resource, and
distribution software have already been purchased by HP 9000
customers implementing a mainframe alternative strategy.
The August Radio HP highlighted a Model 890 deal with Art
Institute International (see "CARS and Lawson leverage HP
9000 Model 890" in this section) to run Lawson financials.
Other recent deals on Series 800 include Hasco, a
manufacturing company in St. Louis, Missouri, against Basic
Four; Source Club, a distributor/retailer in Grand Rapids,
Michigan, offloading from an IBM mainframe; N.C. Mutual
Drug, a manufacturer/distributor in Durham, North Carolina,
downsizing from an IBM 4381; and Champion Products, a
manufacturer in Rochester, New York, downsizing from a
Unisys A-Series.

HP Software Integration Sockets demo in IDEA! Rooms
HP Software Integration Sockets demo in IDEA! Rooms
Jim Garrison/CCSY
For the U.S. only
The HP Software Integration Sockets demo is available in the
IDEA! Rooms 6.0 release. The demo provides a graphical user
interface to nine small applications that have been designed
to showcase the HP Software Integration Sockets feature set.
In the first half of the demo, these applications run on a
single node. Then the applications are distributed to run
on two nodes, without requiring modifications to the
applications themselves, and the applications work as they
did previously. All that is required to distribute the
applications is a small change to the HP Software
Integration Sockets configuration, which is automated in the
demo.
HP Software Integration Sockets is a tool used to integrate
new and existing applications running on heterogeneous
computer systems such as HP-UX and MPE/iX systems.
Regarding HP Software Integration Sockets products, see
articles in the January Computer News.

CPG's total software solution and HP's evolving UNIX system
standard's compliance and networking capabilities were keys
to the selection. The decision was made after multiple joint
presentations by HP and CPG to the selection committee.

CARS and Lawson leverage HP 9000 Model 890
CARS and Lawson leverage HP 9000 Model 890
Lora O'Haver/GSY
Company: Art Institute International, organization that
provides art education
Industry/application: education management system provided
by CARS Information Systems, and financial accounting system
provided by Lawson Software
Systems sold: HP 9000 Model 890, three way
Total sales: $1.3 million
Competition: DG, DEC, IBM, and Sequent
Length of sales cycle: 10 months
Sales rep, office, phone: Hank Gaylor, Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, at 412 or Telnet 782-0235
Selling points
Art Institute International wanted to upgrade nine
decentralized DG systems to a single system with a
centralized database to run more functional applications and
worked with Andersen Consulting. The Institute was
impressed with CARS functionality and began an investigation
of hardware platforms that ran the CARS solution. DEC VAX
did not offer the CARS solution. IBM ran CARS but did not
offer the power needed to manage an environment of the
Institute's size. CARS made sure that the Institute
received the Aberdeen report on HP 9000 systems market
positioning.
The cooperation between the HP, CARS, Lawson, and Informix
sales reps was crucial to the close of the deal. The team
met frequently to share information about the deal and to
plan presentations to the Institute.

SMART avionic test software runs on HP 9000
SMART avionic test software runs on HP 9000
Vladimir Padé/ISD
Aeronautical Radio Inc. (ARINC) has ported Standard Modular Avionics
Repair and Test (SMART) system software to the HP 9000 platform, and the
HP 9000 has been specified for SMART software use.
This has created an opportunity for leveraging HP 9000 sales into
commercial aerospace accounts. You can tell customers that JCAir is
developing an automated test system (ATS) made up of HP
instruments, HP 9000 controllers, and SMART software.
HP plans to market its Test Development Environment (TDE) product to
commercial aerospace test developers and users as an alternative to
SMART software. ATS users can benefit from Integrated
Software Division's (ISD) expertise in integrating ATS software and
hardware integration, lifetime product support, and industry standards
knowledge. As an entry into avionics accounts, you can
use ISD's representation on the Airlines Electronic Engineering
Committee (AEEC), the umbrella group working on future equipment
packaging and installation standards for next generation aircraft,
and Test Equipment Guidance (TEG) 103, the AEEC subcommittee responsible
for SMART digital testing.
ARINC, a nonprofit organization sponsored by the airlines, has
established standards for intensive testing. SMART provides a standard
set of system software written in ANSI standard C for
Abbreviated Test Language for Avionics Systems (ATLAS) test programs
that are usable on test systems designed by different manufacturers.

HP NetWare/iX performance improvements
HP NetWare/iX performance improvements
Mark Hudson/CSY
HP 3000 strengthens its PC integration offering with
significant performance enhancements for the HP NetWare/iX
product. HP 3000 provides customers with a PC LAN server
solution that offers the benefits of high online transaction
processing (OLTP) performance and access to HP 3000
applications.
NetWare/iX Version 3.01 is a fully compatible NetWare server
product that provides transparent integration for NetWare
clients. NetWare/iX provides the functionality of Novell's
NetWare services including file and printer sharing; server
administration and management; and API, including the
Sequenced Packet Exchange (SPX) protocol for developing
client/server applications.
Performance results
The performance results for the HP NetWare/iX product are attributable
to innovative performance tuning. Compared to the original product
throughput performance has improved from 245 percent to
1,000 percent depending on the user load. Additionally, CPU utilization
has decreased by 90 percent.
When comparing HP NetWare/iX to an Intel-based 386/486 PC running native
NetWare, results show that NetWare/iX performance is now at par for low
user loads and surpasses the performance of a
386/486 PC at more than 40 users. As more users are added, throughput
degradation occurs more rapidly for a 386/486 PC than NetWare/iX.
Used in testing was an HP 3000 Series 917LX as server and PC Magazine
benchmark, which is used to characterize HP's file server performance.
Positioning
HP 3000 offers a broad family of scalable, reliable, open,
and secure computer systems. The functionality and high
system availability provide the foundation for business-
critical applications. HP NetWare/iX brings the full-function computing
resources and applications of the HP 3000 to desktop.
HP 3000 is for NetWare customers looking for a scalable and secure
application server. HP 3000 system's growth path and extensive offering
of applications and security features cannot be
duplicated by a PC-based server. NetWare's API (SPX), provides users
with the capability to port business-critical applications to the HP
3000 and take advantage of an OLTP tuned server. The
file and print sharing features of HP NetWare/iX provide value-added
capabilities to the API feature set.
For NetWare customers looking for a dedicated PC LAN server,
either a low-end HP 3000 system or a 386/486 PC can be used. The
benefit of using an HP 3000 is having all services in one manageable
system.
Availability
HP NetWare/iX performance enhancements will be available as a MPE/iX 4.0
release patch in fourth quarter.

Uniface 4GL ships on HP 3000
Uniface 4GL ships on HP 3000
Phiroze Petigura/CSY
In June, Uniface Corporation began shipping Release 5.2 of
client/server 4GL on HP 3000 systems. HP 3000 applications
can be created for HP ALLBASE/SQL and TurboIMAGE databases,
KSAM and MPE files, and third-party relational database
management systems on HP 3000 systems.
Uniface also announced that two HP 3000 major accounts, the State of
Washington Communication Technology Center (CTC) and Hoechst-Celanese
Corporation, will develop next generation applications
using the Uniface 4GL. The State of Washington CTC will use Uniface 4GL
to develop next generation client/server college administration systems
for HP 3000 ALLBASE/SQL servers, MS-Windows, and
OSF/Motif clients. Hoechst-Celanese will use Uniface to implement
financial and manufacturing applications on HP 3000 systems using HP
ALLBASE/SQL and TurboIMAGE. New applications will be
deployed in an MS-Windows and OSF/Motif based client/server environment.
Features and benefits
Users can develop graphical user interface (GUI)
independent, client/server, and terminal-based OLTP
applications. Uniface universal presentation interface
(UPI) technology lets applications developed with 4GL run on
a variety of GUI clients including MS-Windows 3.1,
OSF/Motif, Open Look, OS/2 2.0, and character mode terminals
without modification.
Uniface 4GL supports ANSI/ISO 3-schema architecture so that
applications can be designed independently of database or
file management systems. A Uniface 4GL application can run
without modification on the HP 3000 platform with ALLBASE/SQL,
TurboIMAGE, KSAM and MPE files, third-party
databases such as Oracle, Ingres, Informix, and Sybase, or
on open platforms that include HP-UX, IBM/AIX, VAX/VMS,
VAX/ULTRIX, DOS, and OS/2s.
Uniface 4GL is suited for HP 3000 software suppliers wishing to develop
open applications that are ported across multiple operating systems,
databases, and GUI. Two major HP 3000 value-added
software suppliers, SATCOM and MCSS, announced plans to use Uniface 4GL
to develop next generation client/server solutions for MPE/iX.

HP-UX FORTRAN/9000 update
HP-UX FORTRAN/9000 update
DeAnna Kay Swetzig/STD
This year at the August Interworks and Interex Users
conferences held in New Orleans, Louisiana, HP is announcing
the phased implementation strategy for FORTRAN 90. This
phased implementation protects investments in old FORTRAN
code and delivers key FORTRAN 90 functionality for HP 9000
Series 800 and 300 and HP Apollo 9000 Series 700 and 400 FORTRAN
customers requiring the latest advancements in
technologies and standards.
Features and benefits
FORTRAN 90 is a superset of FORTRAN 77. Customers helped
define which key FORTRAN 90 features are included in the
next HP-UX FORTRAN/9000 compiler products. HP continues to
demonstrate industry leadership by adopting the
international FORTRAN 90 standard.
FORTRAN on PA-RISC is for the power user. For users with
Series 800, 700, and 400/300, the next release of HP-UX
FORTRAN/9000 compiler products includes features for program
development and performance optimization.
New to the Series 800 is the optimizing preprocessor. This
is the same preprocessor included with recent versions of
the Series 700 HP-UX FORTRAN/9000 compiler product. The
newest revision of the HP-UX FORTRAN/9000 compiler has been
specifically tuned for the latest PA-RISC machines.
Programmers can specify the optimization level that best
meets desired tradeoffs between compile time, code size, and
execution performance.
Features to ease FORTRAN ports to HP PA-RISC from CRAY, DEC, Sun
Microsystems, and IBM systems are included in this release.

It is a new workstation bundle update service. All
components are version compatible. Customers pay a monthly
service fee and receive coordinated automatic updates.
Included are application, HP OVW/DOS, and networking
services (ARPA or NS).
Response Center support includes H2026A+L00 HP BasicLine,
H2024A+T00 TeamLine, and H2025A+H00 ResponseLine options OJT
PC DOS and OL7 HP OpenView. Windows and DOS support can be

services rather than bundled option H2016A receive
individual software components as each component is
upgraded. These components may not be version compatible.
P/N 32048X run-time products are required to execute
applications created with the development kit. One copy of
the run-time product must be ordered for each network
management station running applications. Developers are
charged on an HP discount basis. The run-time product is
included in the workstation bundle material update service.
P/N 32048A has changed to P/N 32048C.
HP OVW/DOS Version B.01, released to developers only,
supports 8- and 16-bit characters, enabling developers to
change messages to native languages (this is defined as
globalization rather than localization). No workstation
bundles using B.01 are currently available. B.01 is
scheduled for roll and developers have shipping plans.
HP OVW/DOS end-user and developer classes are available
through NSMD/CCD. NSMD hosts application integration
seminars and will train RCEs at the same time as the

New HP PowerUp upgrade program
New HP PowerUp upgrade program
Karl Freund/WSBU
For the U.S. only
The HP PowerUp upgrade program is a new trade-up program
targeted at the Domain installed base. Customers can trade
in DN series nodes for new PA-RISC based workstations.
Customers can choose from several predefined configurations
that offer substantial net prices regardless of VPA
discount.
Features and benefits
project agreement--Customers sign a special project
agreement before they can participate in the program. Their
only commitment is to trade in 20 or more DN nodes for new
PA-RISC based workstations before the beginning of 1994.
product exhibits--After signing the project agreement,
customers may order from a list of predefined configurations
at specific, attractive net prices. Startup configurations
offer bundled hardware, software, Domain migration tools,
and training classes. User bundles offer several
configurations ranging from HP Apollo 9000 Model 705 to
Model 750, and a Model 425t with a PA-RISC board upgrade
bundled in (with some net prices discounted over 40
percent). Participating customers can get the new HP Apollo
9000 Series 400 PA-RISC upgrade board for Series 400
workstations.
time--Program is terms are available immediately, and
customers can place orders as soon as they sign the project
agreement. Orders can be placed through December 31, 1993,
and deliveries can be scheduled through March 31, 1994,
providing customers an opportunity to spread upgrade
expenses over three years.
market focused--Initially the program offers configurations
that are targeted at design automation, engineering, and
scientific markets. As HP announces workstations,
additional product exhibits with configurations that target
other markets such as CASE will be added.
"SWAT" teams--Because of Domain migration complexity and
special program requirements, regional "SWAT" teams have
been appointed to implement the program in U.S. sales
regions. HP sales reps will receive full compensation for
any sales made into their accounts.
Partners
Because of the program's market focus orientation, HP is
working with several key Domain channel partners to reach
customers in different market segments. The largest segment
of the Domain installed base is EDA, represented by Mentor
Graphics. In the U.S., Mentor Graphics has over 10,000 DN
nodes to be upgraded to PA-RISC. The regional "SWAT" teams
will be working with the Mentor Graphics sales force to
identify and sign key prospects for the program. To
encourage cooperation, Mentor Graphics has agreed to fully
compensate their sales reps for hardware that HP sells into
their accounts through this program.

Domain 10.4 support
Domain 10.4 support
Bev Raines/SWT
HP is committed to providing software investment protection
to Domain customers through the year 2000. The level of
support that Domain will receive is dependent upon customers
since support funding comes from revenue generated by
installed-base software maintenance contracts.
Users will continue to receive the same support: examination
of all service requests; resolution of serious and critical
defects; product patches; and identification of the most
critical services such as limited enhancements, new
peripheral verification and support, and frequency of minor
releases.
To take advantage of support services and special programs,
Domain users need to have an active software maintenance
contract. Users who are not currently receiving software
maintenance will be eligible to participate in the Welcome
Back program.
Customers whose production environments require the use of
Domain for the next few years should move to SR10.4, the
most recent release.

Domain transfers to SWT
Domain transfers to SWT
Bev Raines/SWT
As part of the software life cycle process, which includes
providing extended support and a long-term viable operating
environment, Software Technology Division (SWT) is now
responsible for Domain. SWT also supports a set of HP's
commercial operating system products, MPE V, and the real-
time process control product line, RTE.
Transfer of Domain to SWT is being done in phases. The
layered products are being transitioned first, and core

New HP DesignJet 600 inkjet plotter
New HP DesignJet 600 inkjet plotter
Peter Lawson/STG
Product name and P/Ns: HP DesignJet 600 monochrome inkjet
plotter, P/Ns C2847A and C2848A
Description: large-format plotters that provide hard-copy
output for CAD and drafting systems
Target market: experienced CAD users who have outgrown
their pen plotters but not their pen plotter budgets
On August 10 HP announced two HP DesignJet 600 plotter
models: the A- through D-size model, P/N C2847A, and the A-
through E-size model, P/N C2848A. These lower priced models
replace the original HP DesignJet plotter, P/N C1633A/B.
Features and benefits
The HP DesignJet 600 plotter has numerous improvements and
retains original HP DesignJet plotter features such as final
quality plots in less than six minutes, quiet operation, and
modular interface options.
improved print quality--addressable 600-dpi enhance mode,
300-dpi final mode, addressable 300-dpi draft mode, and ISO
standard line widths as thin as 0.13
easier operation--built-in queuing and nesting for
unattended plotting; improved front-panel menu system
increased memory--standard memory 4 MB expandable to 20 MB
more flexibility for more customers--support for more HP
JetDirect cards for directly connecting to networks
including HP JetDirect cards for Novell Token Ring, P/N
C2059C, LAN Manager Ethernet, P/N C2059B, and LAN Manager
Token Ring, P/N C2059D; and AutoCAD and Microsoft Windows
drivers shipped with product
Product line positioning
The new plotters expand the market for large-format plotters
by providing high resolution for designers and architects,
more flexible connectivity solutions for network users, a
new D-size model for users with space constraints, and lower
prices for price-sensitive customers. The Microsoft Windows
driver opens nontechnical markets such as presentation
graphics and project management.
